Slimming Down For Summer With Performance Blend

Summertime is here! After spending months inside, wrapped in our woolies and fleece, we’re shedding our warm winter layers and getting outside. But sometimes, when we start shedding our clothes, we may start worrying about what we look like without them – and some of us start thinking about how we can shed a few pounds.

As you know from one of my previous posts, Yerba Maté has been proven to aid weight loss as well as help you maintain your desired weight. But Oregon Yerba Maté took it even further, developing a blend of herbs known to increase energy and vitality, as well as melt fat away. The result is our Performance Blend – the most powerful tool for weight loss that I have in my personal arsenal. But it’s not just my secret: Performance Blend is our most popular product. If you’re looking to lose weight, it’ll will become your favorite, too!

Performance Blend contains six powerful herbs – and we use either organic or wildcrafted versions – that will take your regimen to the next level or enhance your current program.

Ginseng is any one of the species of slow-growing perennial plants with fleshy roots, belonging to the genus Panax of the family Araliaceae. Ginseng is found in North America and in eastern Asia (mostly northeast China, Korea, Bhutan, eastern Siberia), typically in cooler climates.

Ginseng has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. You’ve heard about Ginseng being used as a weight-loss aid for good reason. Studies done on the various types of Ginseng all point to it being one of the most powerful herbs to aid in not only weight loss, but also boost cognitive function, improve circulation and prevent cancer.

Ginseng extract stimulates oxidation of fats thereby reducing body fat, improving insulin and glucose levels and preventing high blood pressure. Ginsenosides present in Ginseng exert anti-obesity effect by acting on mechanisms at molecular level which leads to reduced food intake, lowered blood glucose and lowered blood lipid levels.

Ginseng lowers body weight, visceral fat, blood lipids and fat tissue by influencing PPAR protein activity which controls metabolism of fats. What does all this mean? Ginseng promotes weight loss by controlling hormones and enzymes that regulate appetite and prevent fat deposition.

Turnera diffusa, known as Damiana, is a shrub native to southern Texas in the United States, Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean. According to a study done in 2001, Damiana combined with Yerba Maté significantly delayed gastric emptying, reduced the time to perceived gastric fullness and induced significant weight loss over 45 days in overweight patients treated in a primary health care context. That means that when you’re drinking Performance Blend, you’ll feel fuller, faster and for longer.

Pausinystalia johimbe, common name Yohimbe, is a plant species native to western and central Africa. Yohimbe bark contains a compound called Yohimbine.

In 2006 a Serbian study was done to determine the effects of Yohimbine supplementation on body composition and exercise performance in professional soccer players. The results showed the percentage of body fat significantly decreased in the group taking Yohimbine.

Another double-blind study found that women taking 5 mg of yohimbine four times per day along with a weight-loss diet lost significantly more weight than those taking a placebo with the same diet after three weeks. Combining Yerba Maté with Yohimbe means you’ll lose more weight, faster.

Dioscorea villosa, or Wild Yam, is a species of a twining tuberous vine that is native to Eastern North America. Wild Yam is most commonly used by menopausal women to balance their hormones. But extract of Wild Yam also contains DHEA, which helps reduce abdominal fat and improve insulin resistance.

A paper published by researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri (a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial) provided hard evidence of what many had long suspected: DHEA does induce fat loss in humans. Over the 6-month period, the men and women in the current study lost similar amounts, in absolute terms, of abdominal visceral fat. In conjunction with the abdominal fat losses, the researchers observed significant increases in insulin sensitivity (i.e., decreases in insulin resistance), providing further evidence that losing fat goes hand in hand with improved blood sugar control.

Epimedium, also known as Horny Goat Weed, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Berberidaceae. The majority of the species are endemic to China, with smaller numbers elsewhere in Asia, and a few in the Mediterranean region.

Horny Goat Weed naturally balances hormone function without being an actual hormone itself. Balancing hormones – especially cortisol, helps in weight loss. Normally when we feel begin to feel hungry, our blood sugar drops and the brain sends a message to the adrenal glands to release cortisol. Cortisol activates glucose, fats, and amino acids to keep our body fueled with energy until we eat. Cortisol maintains blood sugar levels, and insulin helps our cells absorb glucose. But when we experience stress, both insulin and cortisol remain elevated in the blood, and the extra glucose is stored as fat–mostly in the abdomen.

By keeping our cortisol and insulin under control, the fat can come off and we can keep it off. Horny Goat Weed and Yerba Maté have got your back.

Last, but definitely not least, Performance Blend contains Lepidium meyenii, or Maca. Maca is a herbaceous biennial plant of the crucifer family native to the high Andes of Peru.

Maca is considered a thyroid stimulator by some alternative health experts. In the book, “The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss” by Mary J. Shomon, she notes that Maca is an adaptogenic herb that can help with increasing energy in the body. This natural stimulant may speed up the metabolism, burning more calories and creating weight loss over time.

Maca also provides essential nutrients; carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, unsaturated fats, vitamins and minerals that generally become deficient in individuals who have been on a diet for a while. Vitamins such as B12, B2, and B6 are necessary for synthesizing a variety of enzymes needed in metabolic reactions supporting speed of metabolism. A better functioning thyroid increases the average body temperature thus enhancing the body’s metabolic processes and making it burn more calories.

Performance Blend’s combination of these six herbs can take your weight loss to another level. With the feedback that we’ve received from customers that have been drinking Performance Blend for years, it’s no wonder that it is our most popular blend. And until July 17th, you save on Performance Blend! Get 30% off with promo code: SUMMERSLIM.

Replacing My Morning Coffee With Maté Has Been a Life Changer!

Over the last while, I’ve been getting some questions about my personal experience with Yerba Maté. Maté is a huge part of my life and I love to share my story – so here it is!

Replacing my morning cup of coffee with Yerba Maté has had the most profound effect on my overall health of any product I’ve ever taken! I believe the vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, metabolic enhancers and alkalizing properties in Yerba Maté infuse the body with the ultimate in anti-aging, immune enhancement, and weight management.

I first began selling it in my health food store years ago in teabag form but was not aware of it as a superfood because tea bags are very low potency so they didn’t pack a lot of punch. I’ve talked to people who first experienced Maté this way and I can certainly understand why they didn’t feel inspired to drink it again.

After I moved to Oregon, a new friend from South America gave me a sip from a gourd, which is the way Argentineans drink it. The gourd method of brewing Maté results in a very strong and bitter brew. But I kind of liked the bitterness and could feel the energy and tonic effect almost immediately

The next day I found myself thinking about it again; I had to have it!  It was as if my body was asking for it. So, I got some from my friend and began drinking it everyday. First, my skin improved and felt more radiant. I stopped getting cold sores (which had plagued me for years) and when people around me were getting the flu, I didn’t get it. I started slimming down with no change in my exercise habits and I began to notice that I had a lot more energy to participate in things that I had been avoiding.

The longer I drank it, the more improvement I experienced. I couldn’t believe I had been missing out on this for so long and that no one was talking about it! Yerba Maté really is one of those remarkable health products that with regular use gives you noticeable improvements in your health and wellbeing in a short time.

I have been starting my day with Yerba Maté for over 13 years and it is without a doubt, the most important thing I do. It’s a morale booster, an energizer, immune enhancer, cancer fighter, and more.

If you’re struggling with your weight, you might want to know that Yerba Maté is scientifically shown to decrease BMI (Body Mass Index). I have witnessed stunning transformations time and time again in people when they begin drinking Maté. First, their puffiness goes away. Then, after a few months, you begin to see their waist and hips shrinking. It makes me so happy to witness how the body responds to Yerba Maté. You can literally see the vitality building!

Our Performance Blend is recommended for weight loss because it has metabolism enhancing herbs added in which make it the most powerful tool I have for losing weight and keeping it off.

I’m 54 now and I have a lot more energy than I did in my teens. I wish I had known about Maté back then – I would have done much better in school and sports!

These days, I make sure my 18-year-old daughter always has it on hand. She lets me know whenever she’s running out because she loves the way it helps her focus throughout her day! The caffeine content of Yerba Maté is less than coffee and those other unhealthy energy drinks teens are consuming. So, not only is she getting a healthier energy source, but also vital nutrients that improve her mind and body.

Actually though, the thing I love most about Maté is that it just makes me feel happier. I am a licensed Heal Your Life teacher which is all about the mind/body connection. According to Louise Hay, the founder of Heal Your Life and one of my favorite teachers, thinking positive thoughts is the key to a happy, healthy life. Maté helps me do this. When I wake up to a cup of Yerba Maté, I experience a shift in consciousness that helps me to look at things more positively.

It doesn’t effect the central nervous system in the same way as coffee. That means no jitters – just a smooth and steady stream of calm energy day after day.

It’s so easy to prepare. You just put 1/2 cup of Oregon Yerba Maté in a 32 oz French Press, pour hot water (not boiling) over the mate and let it steep for a few minutes then press. You can drink it plain or add your favorite sweetener and milk if desired,  It’s wonderfully refreshing and energizing over ice as well.

I love Yerba Maté and believe it’s the best way to get started on the path to more health and vitality in your life so I’m offering all new customers a 20% discount on their first purchase of Oregon Yerba Maté until the end of June. Just use promo code FIRSTTIME to claim it!

Yours in health!

Losing Weight and Keeping It Off With Yerba Maté

If you struggle with weight loss, you know how many different products there are that promise to not only help you lose weight, but keep it off.

So how do you choose? Well, scientific proof can help.

According to a study done in 2012, Yerba Maté extract has potent anti-obesity activity in vivo. Additionally, it was observed that Yerba Maté treatment has a modulatory effect on glucose levels related to obesity.

“To this end, by using in vivo animal models of dietary-induced obesity, we have made the interesting observations that Yerba Maté has the ability to decrease the differentiation of pre-adipocytes and to reduce the accumulation of lipids in adipocytes, both of which contribute to a lower growth rate of adipose tissue, lower body weight gain, and obesity. Our data from in vivo studies revealed that Yerba Maté treatment affects food intake, resulting in higher energy expenditure, likely as a result of higher basal metabolism in Yerba Maté-treated mice. Furthermore, in vivo effects of Yerba Maté on lipid metabolism included reductions in serum cholesterol, serum triglycerides, and glucose concentrations in mice that were fed a high fat diet. In conclusion, Yerba Maté can potentially be used to treat obesity and diabetes.”

Another published study shows that Yerba Maté significantly delayed gastric emptying, reducing the time to perceived gastric fullness, and induced significant weight loss over 45 days in overweight patients.

Swiss researchers tested Yerba Maté back in 1999 to verify its weight loss benefits. They discovered that mate had thermogenic properties which cause an increase in body heat through metabolic stimulation.

But even more powerful than scientific proof is hearing the experience of someone who has actually used Yerba Maté successfully in their own weight loss journey. One of our most popular blends is Performance Blend – and there are some great reasons why, including how it supports weight loss and maintenance.

“If I get hungry I just drink Performance Blend and it takes care of it. I’m not hungry anymore!”

— Demi from Costa Mesa, CA

Oregon Yerba Mate’s Performance Blend includes several beneficial herbs including Maca, Ginseng and Wild Yam that work synergistically with our Traditional Blend. Maca directly does not promote weight loss but it provides endurance and energy to support regular exercise. This in turn promotes burning of fat and weight loss. Ginseng will speed up your metabolism and make you feel more energetic throughout the day. And, it is believed that regular Ginseng use can also benefit those who suffer from diabetes, as studies on mice have shown significant improvements in insulin sensitivity with regular use of Ginseng. Wild Yam assists in regulating hormone function – hormonal imbalance can often lead to difficulty with losing weight. Once hormones are back in balance, the excess fat can more easily be shed.

My own personal experience is that drinking Oregon Yerba Maté everyday for 15 years has allowed me to stay the same size I was in my 20’s. I am convinced that anyone who wants to be the best they can be at every age should definitely start drinking Yerba Maté at least twice per day, not only for the weight management, but all the other health benefits as well.

Yours in health!

“Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine Be Thy Food.”

Most of us have heard this quote by the Father of Medicine, Hippocrates. But do we really understand the message which speaks to the importance of eating foods that serve the body as medicine rather than just sustenance?

There are many foods that fall into this category and are known as Superfoods. Superfoods offer healing qualities to the body and help us achieve optimal health and wellness. Yerba Maté is one of these Superfoods.

In 2005, researchers at the University of Illinois studied 25 different types of Maté. They found the Maté to contain “higher levels of antioxidants than green tea” and, based on cell studies, “may help prevent colon cancer.” Studies to do with other types of cancer show promising results.

Investigators from the Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society concluded that Yerba Maté contains “practically all of the vitamins necessary to sustain life”. They focused especially on Pantothenic Acid, remarking that it is “rare to find a plant with so much of this significant and vital nutrient…it is indeed difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to Maté in nutritional value.”

In addition, results from a study done by researchers at the University of Madrid assert a high content of mineral elements, especially – K, Mg, and Mn – in Maté. They considered those findings “to be of great relevance” to the nutritional value of Maté infusions.

Each infusion of Maté contains:

* Vitamins – A, C, E, B1, B2, Niacin (B3), B5, B Complex

* Minerals – Calcium, Manganese, Iron, Selenium, Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus

* Additional Compounds – Fatty Acids, Chlorophyll, Flavonols, Polyphenols, Trace Minerals, Antioxidants, Pantothenic Acid and 15 Amino Acids.

Starting your day with Yerba Maté instead of coffee can dramatically improve your looks, health, energy and mood. Most people feel the benefits with their first infusion, but consistent daily use brings continued improvement. Soon you’ll forget about coffee and be hooked on the feelings of energy, health and wellbeing that Maté is so generous in bestowing.

We Love Strong Bones!

Osteoporosis affects 4 out of every 10 women in the United States. That’s nearly half! In women over 45 years of age, osteoporosis accounts for more days spent in hospital than many other diseases including diabetes, myocardial infarction, and breast cancer.

But aging does not require that you lose your bone mass and end up having a slumped posture, and hip replacement after the age of 50.

Researchers at the National University of Cuyo, in Mendoza, Argentina, measured effects of Yerba Maté as part of a program for osteoporosis prevention and treatment in postmenopausal women.

The study involved 146 postmenopausal women who drank at least 1 liter of Yerba Maté daily for at least 4 years who were compared to a matched group of women who did not drink Yerba Maté.

The results showed that Yerba Maté drinkers had a significant 10% higher lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD). Drinkers also had a significant 6% higher femoral neck BMD.

Yerba Maté drinking was the only factor, other than body mass index (BMI), which showed a significant positive correlation with BMD at the lumbar spine and femoral neck.

I know this to be true, firsthand. A few years ago, I was out for an evening rollerblading session. I inadvertently went up a hill and as I was coming down the other side, ran into a large puddle of water from a recent rain.

I tried to avoid the puddle but my feet went out from under me and I went flying. I came down hard on my hip and shoulder. At 50 years of age, I thought “Uh-oh, I’m in trouble.” But, I gathered myself together, jumped up and skated back to my car – it was a good mile away. I was bleeding, but I had not a single broken bone.

I have no doubt that I owe much of the health of my bones to Yerba Maté and, as always, I find myself very grateful for my journey with this beverage. I’m continuously discovering why the Guarani Indians call it the Drink of the Gods! And you can, too!

Help Your Teen Do Great In School With Yerba Maté!

Teenagers are notorious for drinking sugary, caffeinated drinks like Frappucinos, Red Bulls and Rock Stars so they have the energy to power through their school day. I know this because I’m the mother of three children (with the youngest being eighteen) and I’ve seen it all firsthand!

Yes, they are looking for a burst of energy but these young people are exhausting their adrenal glands without realizing what they’re doing. They’re young so their bodies can handle a lot, but it begins taking a toll very quickly. By the time they are in their twenties, it can negatively impact their hormones resulting in avoidable issues like weight gain.

That’s why I am always thrilled when my daughter calls me to tell me she needs more Yerba Maté – and I send her a package right away! I love knowing that she’s choosing to drink it instead of the other stuff. When I asked her why she gave me these reasons:

“Maté makes me feel healthy. I feel gross when I drink coffee or Red Bull.”
“Coffee makes me feel shaky but Maté gives me energy, and I don’t feel shaky at all!”

After talking with her about it, I became curious about Red Bull so I did some research. I found that It’s nothing more than a dangerous chemical cocktail in a can. Basically, everything in it is synthetic!

RedBull contains a compound called GLUCURONOLACTONE which has been banned in Norway, Uruguay, and Denmark due to the health risks. This chemical was developed by the American government to help boost the morale of soldiers on the battlefield. It was never intended for regular daily consumption, especially teenagers whose bodies are still growing while already going through major change. Wikipedia says that excessive or repeated consumption can lead to cardiac and psychiatric conditions. Knowing this makes me wonder why any parent would allow their teen to drink it at all!

Thank goodness my daughter knows about Yerba Maté and chooses to drink it for energy. It’s organic, natural and provides her with the energy and alertness she needs for school. I love knowing that she’s also getting a plethora of other minerals and nutrients that give her health and mood benefits that will serve her for the rest of her life.

If you’re a parent, you know the feelings of pride and gratitude are monumental when you see your kids healthy, full of energy, and achieving their full potential. If you want to help your teen increase their energy without the harmful effects of chemicals or sugar, get them started on Oregon Yerba Maté this school season. It is pure food as medicine and will give your teenager a leg up during this challenging period in life.

Make it hot or iced and sweeten it with agave or honey. You might just be surprised by how much your teen likes it!

Until Septmeber 15th, stock up for school year by using promo code BACKTOSCHOOL. You’ll save 15% off of any Oregon Yerba Maté blend!

Caffeine, Your Pregnancy and Yerba Maté

Coffee consumption is actually growing in the United States; Bloomberg reports that American consumption is expected to be up 1.5% this year alone! But as much as millions celebrate the energy boost they get from it, we know there are negative consequences to coffee consumption which include its impact on fertility.

When we talk about coffee negatively impacting fertility, we are talking about the caffeine in coffee. Although anything in moderation does not usually cause an issue, excessive use of caffeine (5-6 cups) has been shown to lower pregnancy rates for women using IVF.

According to Time Magazine, a 2002 study in human reproduction looked at 221 couples and concluded that failure to achieve a live birth after a cycle of in vitro fertilization (IVF) was associated with caffeine intake of more than 50 milligrams a day. Women who limited their caffeine intake to less than 50 milligrams had increased IVF pregnancy rates compared with women who consumed more (for reference, the average cup of home-brewed coffee has about 100 milligrams of caffeine).

It is generally accepted that women should decrease their caffeine intake while pregnant. But when it comes to Yerba Maté, science supports that the caffeine in Maté affects the body differently. In a Brazilian study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2005, “Maté Drinking During Pregnancy and Risk of Preterm and Small for Gestational Birth,” it was concluded during a study of over 5000 women, over 70% of whom drunk Maté daily, that:

Prevalence of daily Maté drinking was high in pregnant women and, contrary to the hypothesis, no harmful effect on intrauterine growth or duration of pregnancy was detected. In fact, some of these women reported drinking up to 5 cups of Maté per day! I have heard it discussed that the caffeine in Maté is processed differently by the body. And, although I am not certain of why or how that is, this study shows that the impact on fertility that we associate with coffee consumption simply doesn’t exist with Yerba Maté.

I’ve seen the first hand effects of Yerba Maté on a pregnancy; my daughter gave birth to her daughter 4 months ago and she drank Yerba Maté almost every day during her pregnancy. And, now that she’s a busy mom, Maté keeps her healthy, energized and focused on her baby girl in a way that coffee never could (or should), so I asked her to share her experience.

“I felt so tired and miserable throughout my first trimester. Unfortunately, I actually didn’t realize that Matè was safe to drink during pregnancy until about 9 weeks in. What a difference it made! I had energy again!

I drank it every single day I could. Those days when I couldn’t get it on set or at work, I would substitute coffee and it really bogged me down. I just didn’t get that GOOD feeling I got with Matè. I began to realize how Matè was seriously changing my life. I was always in a good mood and being in a good mood really impacts your quality of life.

My pregnancy had literally zero complications and I delivered a healthy baby at 8lbs, 3 ozs naturally. I continue to drink it daily while nursing and I feel almost prideful about giving the benefits of Oregon Yerba Matè to my baby! She’s so lucky to have them at such a young age.

H. Tighe

In a nutshell, if you’re pregnant or thinking of getting pregnant, do yourself a big favor and start drinking Yerba Maté instead of coffee. Not only will you feel better, but  you’ll be supporting your baby’s development and lifelong health!

Yours in health!

Improve Your Sex Life NOW With Performance Blend!

From having more interest and better performance to increased energy and stamina, Yerba Maté can improve your sex life! Let’s face it, we don’t talk about it as openly as we could but we all know that a healthy sex life is fundamentally important to our well being.

Unfortunately, there are many factors that can contribute to a lack of satisfaction in this department including unhealthy diet, stress and lack of regular exercise. Men are affected by erectile dysfunction starting earlier and earlier. In fact, the Massachusetts Male Aging Study reported that, at age 40 approximately 40% of men are affected and it goes downhill from there.

Most people look to prescription medications which can sometimes come with serious side effects and at the end of the day, it’s not solving the problem. The good news is that our bodies can function optimally with proper nutrition and lifestyle choices. Drinking Performance Blend daily is a great way to start!

Let’s talk about how Performance Blend can help naturally. We know that Yerba Maté increases energy, but anecdotal evidence points to it as being effective in treating ED as well as increasing sexual potency. There are also a number of herbs that are known to relieve symptoms of ED which are included in our Performance Blend, so let’s take a closer look at these herbs.

Ginseng has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat ED. In one study, 45 men with ED were given either Korean red ginseng or a placebo. The men receiving the herb took 900 milligrams, three times a day, for eight weeks. At the end of eight weeks, those who took Korean red ginseng felt improvement in their ED symptoms compared to those who took the placebo. Researchers concluded that red ginseng may be an effective alternative treatment for impotence.

Horny Goat Weed is known for being an aphrodisiac and touted as a testosterone booster. It derives its layman names from goats and sheep who acted a bit more frisky after consuming the bushes that grew near their fields. A 2008 lab study found that a compound in the herb blocks the effects of an enzyme that restricts blood flow to the penis. Epimedium, the suspected active component of Horny Goat Weed, appears to act as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, similar to some drugs used for ED. What’s more, the study indicated that Horny Goat Weed could theoretically work better – and cause fewer side effects – than current drugs for erectile dysfunction!

Damiana is considered as an aphrodisiac in folk medicine. Estrada et al. conducted a study to determine whether Damiana recovers sexual behavior in sexually exhausted male rats and to identify the main components in an aqueous extract. Damiana (80 mg/kg) significantly increased the percentage of males achieving one ejaculatory series and resuming a second one. In addition, Damiana significantly reduced the post-ejaculatory interval. The results supported the use of Damiana as an aphrodisiac in traditional medicine and suggest possible therapeutic properties of Damiana on sexual dysfunction.

Maca is an Andean plant of the brassica (mustard) family. Preparations from Maca root have been reported to improve sexual function and there’s some evidence to back up claims of its sex-enhancing properties.

Dave Asprey of Bulletproof fame wrote about a double-blind 2002 study in which researchers gave 57 men either 1.5g Maca, 3g Maca, or placebo. The men received the supplements daily for 12 weeks. After 8 weeks, men in the two Maca groups reported heightened sexual desire.

Another study looked at 20 depressed men on SSRIs – antidepressants that often decrease sex drive – and found that 3g of Maca daily significantly increased self-reported libido. It contains a plethora of vitamins and minerals; it is a good source of vitamin C, iron, potassium, copper, and B vitamins as well.

Yohimbe has been found to increase circulation to the erectile tissues aiding in physiological and psychogenic (mental/emotional) impotence. Impotence, the inability to sustain erection, is the most common sexual disorder among men. Yohimbine is the active component found in Yohimbe bark.

Performance Blend includes all of these herbs in our proprietary Yerba Maté base giving you a powerhouse of nutrition for optimal performance and stamina!

Don’t just take our word for it, try Performance Blend now and use performance code PERFORMANCE to save 20% for a limited time.

Preventing Cancer with Oregon Yerba Maté

These days most people believe it’s inevitable that they will hear the Big C word! Perhaps you’ve supported a family member through treatment, stood by a friend after they learned they were ill, or have battled cancer yourself. According to the National Cancer Institute, nearly half of the population in the US will get cancer.

The good news is that the number of people living beyond a cancer diagnosis reached nearly 14.5 million in 2014 and is expected to rise to almost 19 million by 2024. Yes, treatment options have opened up considerably.

At OYM, we choose to never get it at all and according to the American Cancer Society there are many things we can do to avoid developing it like eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, minimizing stress and exercising are at the top of the list.

Let’s talk about staying healthy. I’m 54 and have managed to stay healthy and fit for most of my life. I haven’t even had an antibiotic in my lifetime. My partner is 74 and has more energy and vitality than most men in their 20’s. So, what’s the secret?

Well, there’s no one secret, but here are some basic things I believe have kept us on the path to optimal health.

-Drink Oregon Yerba Maté everyday and twice per day when possible to alkalize and energize the body infusing it with antioxidants and cancer preventing nutrients, along with weight loss benefits.

-Drink 64 oz. of purified water daily for hydration and detoxification.

-Stabilize blood sugar by eating regular meals. The magic plate is 1/3 protein, 1/3 green vegetable, 1/3 complex carbohydrate along with some healthy fat including grass fed butter, ghee or olive oil. We try our best to eat organic wherever possible.

-We like to follow the Blood Type Diet to maximize genetic potential.

-Remove sugar from your diet as much as possible substituting agave, stevia, honey or other healthier choices. Avoid aspartame and other chemical sweeteners.

-Incorporate movement into your daily routine. Don’t sit for hours on end without moving. Run up and down some stairs, go for a brisk walk, dance, do some burpees, hold a plank position, whatever fits your lifestyle.

-Meditate for at least 20 minutes daily while breathing deeply to oxygenate the body.

-Think deliberately choosing happy thoughts that make you feel happy and relaxed. Saying affirmations are a good daily practice.

-Watch uplifting movies and listen to music that make you feel good.

-Take a few high quality supplements including a multi-vitamin and mineral, fish oil and probiotics.

A few more facts about Yerba Maté and cancer prevention:

It’s the best choice for a non-jittery boost of energy as it’s green and has less caffeine than coffee or black tea. While green tea has 144 active compounds, Yerba Maté has 196 active compounds, including vitamins (A, C, E, B1, B2, Niacin (B3), B5, and B Complex), minerals (Calcium, Manganese, Iron, Selenium, Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, and Zinc) and antioxidants. In fact, Yerba Maté actually has higher polyphenol and antioxidant counts than both green and black teas.

The National Cancer Institute lists a number of studies on their website that show increasing one’s intake of antioxidants can help prevent cancer. From their website: “In laboratory and animal studies, the presence of increased levels of exogenous antioxidants has been shown to prevent the types of free radical damage that have been associated with cancer development”.

Additionally, according to a study done in 2011, the Dicaffeoylquinic acids in Yerba Maté induced apoptosis in colon cancer cells. What this means is that Yerba Maté could be not only a potential anti-cancer agent and could mitigate other diseases also associated with inflammation – this is key since inflammation can lead to cancer progression.

Cancer forces us to pay attention to our health, but why wait for the wake up call? Start now and you can enjoy a healthy, disease free body that will serve you for many years to come.

To your health!
